With the year 2012 now here and an increasing consensus that we are going to experience more crime, civil unrest and even riots, it is a good time to be thinking about how to defend yourself. Many preppers and survivalists think they will be safe since they have guns and they practice using them, but everyone isn’t so well prepared.

The problem is that most of us don’t have guns with us at all times. The video footage of the Rodney King L.A. Riots and any number of videos from YouTube teach us that a totally innocent person can get caught in the middle of a very bad situation with no warning. All the guns in the world can’t help us then when they are at home.

Also, you may be at home and faced with a home invader and if you don’t own a gun or can’t get to it in time, you will be in a situation where someone has the drop on you. You are then at a tremendous disadvantage and your life could be in danger.

Even if the home invader or carjacker or other bad guy is only after your personal possessions, you don’t want to be at their mercy. But you are at their mercy if you are surprised and don’t have a gun with you.

So what are some things that you can do to give yourself peace of mind as you see the economy worsening and crime increasing and people getting more desperate?

The first thing to do is to learn to use everyday objects and household items as weapons to defend yourself. For instance, knowing that a can of oven cleaner kept in an accessible spot is there to spray in the face of a home invader can save your life.

The second thing to do is to check out a very simple, uncomplicated self-defense system that doesn’t require weeks or months to master so that you know a couple of simple moves that you can employ without having to think too much. When you are surprised by the bad guys, you don’t have time to react.

This is a good time to check out defending yourself without weapons.

You can also learn a lot more about keeping your home safe as well as other aspects of getting through the tough times ahead with an urban survival manual.

You may be surprised at how little preparation it takes to give yourself a great deal of peace of mind as you are positioned to meet disaster head on.

Five Ways to Stay Warm When the Power Goes Out

Urban Survival is all about knowing how to, in the parlance of the US Marines, adapt, improvise and overcome. So if you have a power outage in the dead of winter, what do you do to stay warm? (we don’t even have to mention keeping your water faucets trickling to prevent your pipes from freezing).

Tip 1) Minimize Radiant Heat Loss. All of your windows, unless they are really updated, argon filled, double pane with UV reflective coating, will allow a lot of heat to escape right through the glass. If you need to be convinced of this stand in front of a window when the sun is shining through and note the difference – radiant heat is what you are feeling. It works both ways. While the sun is shining, heat comes in. When the sun is not shining, heat goes out. Pull the blinds!

Tip 2) Check Your Fireplace.
If your flue is open, not only can heat just passively rise up through the chimney, but wind blowing outside will create a suction and pull heat from your house. Close the flue and, if possible, seal up the fireplace opening.

Tip 3) Camp Out in Your Bedroom. In the Middle Ages the kings and queens who lived in castles had to deal with no glass windows. There is a good opening scene in “The Lion in Winter” that shows the king getting out of his four poster bed and needing to break the ice on top of his wash bowl before he can splash cold water on his face. The reason for the four poster beds was that the castle was cold and with the curtains drawn around them, those sleeping in the bed had a smaller space that their body heat, and bed warmers, could heat.

Take a lesson from the kings and pitch a small tent in your bedroom (or the warmest room in the house) and you will sleep several degrees warmer.

Tip 4) Warm Your Shoes. The worst thing you can do in the morning is wake up and put cold shoes on your feet. Your extremities have it tough enough without getting chilled. Keep your shoes in your sleeping bag so they stay warm.

Tip 5) Exercise and Eat Before Bed. We’re not talking about a ten mile run and a 5 course dinner, but a little exercise – a few jumping jacks – and a high calorie snack will get your metabolism going and make it much easier to warm your sleeping bag or bed. Start out warm.

There are a lot of other great tips for power outages and other things in the urban survival guide “When the Last Bubble Bursts: Survival Without the Tinfoil Hat” that you can check out right Here.

Christmas Time Prepping Opportunities

Okay, tis the season to be thinking about the deals on preps you can take advantage of. Not sure what you can do for SHTF with a huge supply of Christmas wrapping paper on sale for half off the day after Christmas, but here are some other ideas:

urban survival manual led lighting

White LED Lights

LED Christmas lights. This is a BIG DEAL, as they will be on sale after Christmas. Even if you aren’t thinking of solar energy for off the grid capabilities, there are a few reasons that you want to get lighting that takes very little energy. First off, they take very little energy and saving every penny possible on your electric bills after an economic collapse makes sense. If you do decide to get a small solar panel or two (or someone gives you a nice prepper gift like solar energy), you have a great setup ready. You can power about three strings of LED lights for the same energy as a single 100 watt bulb. That is huge.

urban survival manual canned pumpkin

Canned Yams and Pumpkin. Packed full of good calories and nutrition, these two items will be on sale big time after Christmas. Don’t make pumpkin pies? No worry. Make brownies for the kids (or yourself) and substitute the canned pumpkin for the oil and eggs. You’ll get normal tasting brownies, but with less fat and they are filling. THIS IS HUGE.

If you get one of those “buy 10 for $10″ sales that are so common for brownie mix, you have an opportunity to make inexpensive comfort food for very cheap and not have to worry about the availability or price of fresh eggs. Go online and you’ll find a few different ways to incorporate sweet potatoes (aka yams) into your meals.

This is a sensible prepper deal – save money and enhance the nutrition your family gets. It’s not all glorious guns with urban survival, but these urban survival techniques WILL change your life after SHTF.

Global Food Crisis Could Hit America in 2012

It comes as no surprise to preppers that there is a global food crisis caused by droughts in key food exporting countries. Add to that the economic instability of the European Union, the turmoil in the Middle East with the “Arab Spring” now spreading to Syria, and the US debt crisis.

The question that most preppers ask themselves is what will be the catalyst for a SHTF scenario – whether you define that as another Great Depression, or as a total societal breakdown. It is really anyone’s guess, as all of these issues are so intertwined and any one of them will affect all the others.

The bottom line is that Americans should be prepared for a year unlike any other in our history. Not because of the Mayan calendar or space aliens or anything wild like that. Just because there is so much uncertainty and our current system is really a house of cards waiting for a light breeze to topple it.

As the holiday season arrives and then the time for New Year’s resolutions, think about how the global food crisis will affect you and your loved ones.

If they need some convincing, remember that it is very easy to overwhelm them with information. So try a simple, straightforward, and succinct resource like these on food shortages or on global financial crisis hits America

Most of all, keep positive and don’t overdose on Doom and Gloom in the news. Odds are that you are doing everything you can do to prep now. If not, get going….

SHTF Driving Skills – Keeping Safe in Your Car

Whether it is a total societal breakdown in the United States, rioting, looting, civil unrest or merely skyrocketing crime due to hyperinflation, personal safety will be a paramount concern. While it is pretty easy to stay safe in your home, maintaining safety while in your car can be very difficult.

Defensive Driving – Don’t Be a Victim

There are two major ways that you can be victimized in your car. One is by being a carjack victim and the other is being targeted for a smash and grab. Carjackers prey on the unaware. Make it a habit to be looking around you, especially at stop signs and red lights, and be thinking of how you could drive off in a hurry.

Always leave at least a half car length in front of you; never pull right up to a car’s bumper. A common trick is for a car to stop in front of you so that you can’t maneuver and drive away as someone comes up to your car to carjack you. If you feel that you are in danger, all you have to do is hit the gas and jerk the steering wheel and drive away.

Another trick is the “bumper tap,” where the person behind you at a stop sign or red light hits you lightly. When you get out to see if there is damage, their partner standing on the street corner jumps in your car and drives off. If you do get out of your car, ensure that you take your cell phone with you so that at least you can call police. Leaving your cell phone on the dashboard or seat renders you helpless.

If someone does get the drop on you to carjack you, remember that you can always replace your belongings; no car and certainly nothing in it is worth getting killed over. Even being beaten severely will cost you thousands of dollars for a trip to the emergency room. Be smart and think about your safety. Get out and run.

A Flat Tire Doesn’t Have To Mean a Dangerous Breakdown

Often times carjackings or robberies are just crimes of opportunities. If you find yourself with a flat tire in a situation where you don’t feel safe, just continue to drive. Anyone who has seen a few episodes of “COPS” will tell you that you can drive a long way on a flat, even after the tire has shredded to nothing. You will be out the cost of a tire and perhaps a wheel, but you will be safe! Changing a tire requires your attention and it is just too easy for someone to come up behind you while you are working. Also, once the car is on the jack, you are totally immobilized. Call for help or drive on the flat.

Smash and Grab

If you leave a purse, briefcase or laptop case on the passenger seat while you drive, you are advertising to criminals that they can get an easy score at your expense. Drug dealers use hand signals from street corner to street corner, and so do other criminals. Once someone spots you with a bag on your passenger seat, their partner waiting at the next stop sign or red light has only to run up and smash your window and grab the bag. They will be gone in seconds. Don’t advertise to be a victim.

Hyperinflation and Urban Survival

More and more people, even those who are not Preppers, are beginning to fear the effects of America’s runaway national debt, stagnant economy and the increasing unemployment.  As soon as the government / Federal Reserve start printing money because no foreigners will continue to buy our debt and finance our deficit spending, inflation will set in.  Just as it has happened in many other countries, inflation will turn to hyperinflation and the economic collapse will result in riots, food shortages and chaos.  This is what is called an SHTF (Sh-t hits the fan) scenario.
For those living in more rural or suburban areas, the threat of riots seems very remote.  However, those living in an urban environment will no doubt face real life and death struggles as chaos ensues from government aid checks that can’t even buy a week’s groceries due to runaway, hyperinflation.   When people get desperate to feed their families, they will do desperate things.
The lesson from Germany in the 1920′s and 30′s is that people in the cities will even form gangs and raid the small rural towns where the farmers are, blaming these farmers for the lack of food in the stores.  They don’t care that the farmers can’t afford to buy gas to bring their crops to market in a hyperinflationary environment where prices rise literally every single day.
In one case, some rioting people even killed the mounted police sent to quell a riot and butchered their horses to eat.  Houses were cold as fuel was in short supply, and park benches disappeared, as did trees in the city, as people burned everything they could to stay warm.
So if this scenario, or anything even approaching it, could be headed for us soon, how do we prepare?
The first, most important thing is to start buying and storing more non-perishable food – canned goods and dry beans, pasta and rice.  Start cooking meals with these basic ingredients so that you save money, with which you can buy even more food, and get used to eating these more economical, healthy foods.  A family of four can easily drop $20 at McDonalds, or choose to buy a 50 lb bag of rice that will feed them for many days.
The second thing to do is have a defense plan.  This means starting with the whole family knowing what to do if civil unrest occurs, and NEVER to talk to anyone else about the food stockpile.  If you tell someone and they mention it to  someone else and word gets around, your house will become a looting target and your entire family will be in danger.  Your defense plan should also include either firearms or other defensive weapons – even mace or a can of wasp spray will deter attackers.
Finally, don’t throw away your heavy plastic juice bottles or two liter soda bottles. Instead, rinse them and fill them with water so that you have at least 7 gallons of water per person stored – enough for drinking and food preparation for a week – in case the utilities are interrupted.

Hardening Your House to Make it Safer From Burglars, Rioters and Looters in SHTF

Unless you have priceless pieces of art or lots of cash laying around that a burglar knows about, chances are the only reason that your home will be broken into is because it presents an easy, irresistible target. Although burglar alarms are nice, burglars know that many people forget to turn their alarms on. They also know that they have at least 2 minutes before the police are called, as the security company first calls you to verify if there is an emergency. So how do you keep burglars far away? It’s called “house hardening” and it means making your house a less attractive target and also harder to get into.

It Starts Far From the House – at the Curb

Everyone has heard that good lighting will discourage burglars. But beautiful flowers can be even more of a deterrent! Plant rosebushes at all of your windows, or at least under the windows that are less visible from the curb, to deter burglars. The prospect of climbing through thorns to break into your window will help the would-be burglar choose another target.

Also, whether you own a dog or not, a 99 cent “Beware of Dog” sign is a great addition to your fence or gate. Given the option, a burglar would rather not deal with Fido! While your immediate neighbors might wonder why you have a sign and no dog, a burglar is generally not one of your neighbors, and won’t know the difference.

Where Most Burglars Come In

Once you have planted your roses and put up your sign(s), turn your attention to the number one entry point for burglars: your front door. At the very least, install “long throw” deadbolts on your doors to make it more difficult for a bad guy to force his way in. Better still is a product like “The Door Club” or any other jamb device that reinforces your door. The biggest, thickest door is only as strong as the two or three screws holding the lock’s striker plate on the door frame. Most any standard door can be forced pretty quickly, believe it or not.

Next, harden your overhead garage door. All garage door openers have a red cord hanging from the mechanism that you can pull to disengage the door in case the power goes out, so that you can open the door without the opener. At the end of the red cord is normally a little plastic “T-Handle” that you grab onto in order to disengage the garage door opener. What some smart burglars are doing is coming up to your garage door, leaning / pushing against the top panel and inserting a coat hanger through the gap. With this, they are able to fish around and grab that T-handle and yank it, disengaging the garage door. With a little practice, even you can learn to do this within a minute! By merely removing the T-handle, you thwart this clever way burglars have to enter your house.

SHTF – What Does It Really Mean

If you keep hearing about SHTF these days and wonder what it means, it refers to a major event throwing the country into turmoil. SHTF actually stands for “Shit Hits The Fan” and could be an economic collapse or a terror attack that results in civil unrest and chaos. Although it is becoming popular for some people to speculate about the year 2012 signifying the “end of the Mayan calendar” and therefore the end of the world, few people really think of the end of the world when talking about SHTF. Here are a few scenarios that “Preppers” (those who stock food and other supplies to be prepared for a disaster – natural or manmade) and “Survivalists” (more “hardcore Preppers” focused on defending themselves) are thinking about when using the term SHTF:

EMP – This stands for Electro-Magnetic Pulse and is the result of a nuclear warhead being detonated many miles above the ground. The purpose of such a nuclear attack is not to kill people through blast or radiation, as the burst is more than 100 miles up, but rather to take advantage of the extreme burst of electro-magnetic energy that is created with a nuclear explosion. At high altitudes, a nuclear explosion’s electro-magnetic energy will ‘ride’ along the lines of the earth’s own magnetic field and destroy the power grid and most electronic circuits from horizon to horizon. This is a bloodless way for an enemy to plunge America into darkness, and it would take decades to rebuild all the electrical infrastructure. Think of not having electricity for years. All cell phones would be useless and the circuitry in your vehicle would be ruined. This is almost a doomsday scenario, as Americans would have no gas, water or food deliveries.

CME – This refers to a “Coronal Mass Ejection,” which is a natural electro-magnetic discharge from the sun. These happen all the time, and are usually harmless, but the intensity rises and falls in cycles. In the years 2012 to 2015, the CME activity is going to be especially intense and many fear that our power grid could be knocked out, just as if a nuclear EMP attack occurred.

Civil Unrest – Most every week we can see riots on the news, and they are nothing new in the world. However, the fear that our social-welfare state, with over 44 million Americans on food stamps, is teetering on the precipice of insolvency. If foreign governments decide not to continue to finance America’s spending by buying our debt, the Treasury will run out of money and the only answer will be to print more of it. Money printing leads to hyperinflation and very quickly, the value of peoples’ life savings evaporates. When people lose everything and their government checks buy less and less food, they take to the streets.

The three scenarios listed above are just the most common events that are thought of by people who use the term “SHTF.” There are many more, with varying degrees of probability. However certain one of these is, there is always a possibility that you may lose power or water or your income, or be forced to evacuate your home due to a natural disaster. The wisest thing to do is to be prepared no matter what happens.

Economic Collapse – How to Prepare / Explain to Family and Friends

Consider forwarding this post to friends and family who still don’t get it…

Economic Collapse: Could It Happen Here?

With out of control government spending and more cities, counties and even  states having financial crises, the possibility of a Collapse in the US is  becoming more and more real to many people. Hyperinflation and riots are what  many experts predict could be coming our way soon, and it wouldn’t be the first  time in history. The country in the Western Hemisphere most like the US,  Argentina, suffered a total economic collapse just ten years ago, plunging their  once thriving country into a period of chaos, riots and crime.

Before the collapse in 2001, the Argentine middle class was at least as well  off as the middle class in the US. Argentina was, and remains to this day, one  of the top grain exporters in the world. However, incompetent government  officials, bad economic policy, runaway borrowing and spending led the  government to one day having to devalue its currency, once on par with the  dollar, to one-third of its former value. This happened almost overnight, as  banks were closed and accounts frozen and middle class workers who saved their  entire lives saw their savings evaporate. The pensions of retirees were suddenly  worth a third of what they had been the week before.

What Do I Do If My Money Becomes Worth Less and  Less?

Argentine author Fernando Aguirre advises Americans to invest in precious  metals, as they are a “hard currency” that will hold value much better than the  paper currency that the government continues to print. With cash being less  valuable, expect property crimes to skyrocket. For this reason, Aguirre devotes  a large percentage of his book, “Surviving in Argentina” to self-defense, as his  former middle class life has turned into one in which personal security is of  paramount importance in light of skyrocketing crime.

How Will I Feed My Family?

The other lesson that should be learned from what happened in Argentina is  that Americans should have a food storage program, where they have several weeks  of non perishable food in their home. In times of economic crisis, grocery store  shelves can be empty and, even if there is ample food, it may either be  unaffordable or civil unrest may make a trip to the store dangerous. If you  store food that your family is already eating, there is no financial risk, as  you will definitely eat it anyway. But if there is an economic collapse, you  will be glad you put money into your pantry instead of a bank at one quarter of  a percent interest.

For more specific plans about being prepared, you can go to our ’nuts and bolts’  regular guy Prepper YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/survive2day.

Riots, Looting and Civil Unrest – How to Stay Safe

Whether it is an isolated incident like Hurricane Katrina wreaking havoc on  New Orleans, or a natural disaster or terror attack creating widespread panic,  or an economic collapse resulting in rioting and looting, many respected experts  believe that civil unrest could be in our future. Without even considering what  precipitates it, it is a good idea to have an understanding of what could happen  and how to keep yourself and your family safe.

The Safest Place To Be During Civil Unrest

The majority of deaths and injuries happen to people who are out on the  streets – whether they are there to fight, loot or just stand in line for food  or water. Rule Number One therefore, is stay off the streets and prepare  yourself and your family so there is no need to venture outside the safety of  your home.

Typically the only reason that a law-abiding citizen would have for going out  during a time of civil unrest is if they needed food or water, in case the  utilities were interrupted. Therefore, if you have food and water supplies in  your home, you can stay where it is safest – inside.

If the power grid is shut off, most municipalities have only enough backup  generator power to keep the water pressure up for 3 days. After that, or perhaps  much sooner, you will be out of water. However, there is still plenty of  drinkable water left in your home even after your faucet stops working. Your  water heater alone holds 40 or more gallons of water that can be drained, and by  opening the faucet in the highest part of the house you can drain the water  remaining in the pipes out of the lowest faucet in the house long after water  pressure is lost. If you’ve had the foresight to store drinking water in thick  plastic bottles (like juice bottles or soda bottles), you can last even longer.  A gallon per day per person will suffice for drinking and cooking.

With respect to food, everyone should store up at least a few weeks of extra  non-perishables in their pantry. If you store what you normally eat and rotate  it on the shelves, you will never lose money throwing food away, but you will  have the peace of mind knowing that you will not have to risk injury or death by  going out onto dangerous streets.

The Most Dangerous Place to Be During Civil  Unrest

Making the decision to “bug-out” or leave your home is a very big decision.  As soon as you leave your home, you become a refugee, and bad things happen to  many refugees. If you leave a moment too late, you could run out of gas on a  highway that is bumper to bumper and backed up for many miles.

If you do absolutely have to leave, the best time to have worked out what to  take with you is well ahead of time – when you are not panicked. Generally  you’ll want to take a box with your important papers, blankets, extra clothes,  toiletries and food and water. Don’t forget a can opener. If you have time, it  is a good idea to turn off the water.

The Moral of the Story

None of the preparations discussed here will cost you extra money. However,  if you look at how the refugees fared in Hurricane Katrina, hoping and waiting  for government help, you will see that preparations can save your family a whole  lot during an emergency. Be wise and be prepared, and you will not regret  it.

Update on eFoods Direct

First off, I must say that eFoods Direct has been very responsive to this issue and seems to be genuinely interested in fixing the cause of the problem.

What I think is happening is as follows:

The pouches that are shipped in the green totes are able to slosh around in transport causing the powder to abrade and leverage the seals open over time.

The pouches packed tighter in the smaller corrugated boxes arent leaking because they arent able to move around so freely.

I think that the issue would be solved by better pouch seals and dont think that the shipping containers packing methods, etc. are faulty.

Other pouches that use different seal configurations (pasta, potatos, granola) arent leaking because the seals are stronger.

Quality Issues with eFoods Direct

We were happy to review eFoods Direct foods a few months ago and report that the food was delicious. We recently decided to place an order under their “Buy 3 – Get 1 Free” promotion. We are disappointed to report that the food came with poorly sealed pouches and several were leaking.

We called and requested replacements for the bad packages which they eventually sent. When we received the replacement order, we were again disappointed to see that powder from YET ANOTHER DEFECTIVE POUCH had leaked all over inside the tote.

Needless to say, poorly sealed pouches are not good for your long term food storage. At this point we CANNOT RECOMMEND EFOODS DIRECT. If you have already purchased from eFoods Direct. OPEN YOUR BOXES AND EXAMINE THE POUCHES INDIVIDUALLY for leaks.

Another reason you should have multiple sources of essentials. If one supply fails, you have a backup. We CAN RECOMMEND the following sources:

LDS Store click on “Self Reliance” under the “Home and Family” heading. We have purchased from the Latter Day Saints (or Mormons) and the food is always very inexpensive and the quality has always been great.

Honeyville Farms good for freeze dried meat and other supplies. Our experience with Honeyville has been very good.

Crucial preparedness info from our friend in Argentina

Fernando “FERFAL” Aguirre has learned to survive the urban streets in a post-economic collapse Argentina. “FERFAL” as his friends call him is an urban survivalist. What sets him apart from most “survivalists” out there is that he has actually lived it. His first-hand experience is just what we need to help us survive the coming NEXT GREAT DEPRESSION in America.

Here is an article Fernando wrote for Chris Martensen’s blog

Fernando has also written a great book that is available at Amazon and we believe that it is a MUST READ.

5 Reasons to be Prepared RIGHT NOW More than Ever!

1) Bin Laden’s capture was announced and Al Qaeda allegedly is threatening to retaliate (whether you believe it is true, or just a “hoax” the danger remains the same).

2) The US debt ceiling is about to be breached within a week, unless something happens in Congress.  That is a perfect opportunity for a news headlines-grabbing crisis / terror attack….

3) Chris Martenson (www.ChrisMartenson.com) believes that some major crisis is imminent. He has warned all his subscribers to take immediate action asap. He is not the only one.

4) Major craziness in the commodities markets (silver / oil).

5) The economic situation in Greece is hitting the fan.

All of this instability and concern has a way of morphing together in a synergistic way.  Those who don’t trust our government are quick to point out that a “false flag attack” (a staged act of terror) is a great way to get our attention off of these concerns and allow them to pass emergency measures.  Those who write this way of thinking off as crazy, tinfoil hat conspiracy theories will allow for the fact that the more uneasiness and turmoil there is, the higher the odds are for some kind of major economic event that could cause us huge problems.

In short, the convergence of a lot of events right now creates a lot of geo-political instability.  Remember: Money in the bank earns less than 1% interest, while money invested in non-perishable foods and supplies appreciates at the rate of inflation!

Don’t Delay!

Radiation “Not Likely” To Reach USA

State officials in Washington are claiming that radiation from Japan is not likely to reach the US. I hope they are right, but it is pretty early to tell. It all depends on how much radiation is vented or leaked into the atmosphere. Time will tell. In the mean time it might be good to check online or go to your local pharmacy and purchase some potassium iodide tablets. They won’t protect you from all radiation hazards, but the CDC recommends them to protect the most vulnerable part of your body to radioactive iodine, your thyroid.

They are correct in saying that it is a good idea to have food stored for emergencies.

That for me is just common sense.

Get ready for higher food prices

http://www.omaha.com/article/20110210/NEWS01/702109884/0#get-ready-for-higher-food-prices

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110215/ap_on_bi_ge/us_food_prices

With increasing global population, investor demand for commodities, increasing crude oil costs, and  inflation being exported by the US, expect food costs to increase for a long time to come. Unless there is a global “currency reset” as predicted by some, the future of both food costs and the global economy will continue to look grim.

Food Grade Buckets

What is a food grade plastic bucket? There’s a lot of misinformation out there about this. One way to know if the buckets are safe is if they are marked NSF, FDA or USDA approved. Another way is if you get them used from a local bakery or other food service company where they have been used for food. Other than this, there’s no guarantee that the buckets you have are food grade.

Another thing to consider is that food grade buckets may have been used for storing chemicals, etc. If you aren’t sure what was in a used bucket, don’t use it.

Buckets stamped with HDPE and the number 2 are made of High Density PolyEthylene plastic and in most cases are safe. If you aren’t sure, call the manufacturer.

Home Depot “Homer” buckets are marked HPDE and have the number 2, but the orange dye may not be safe.

What I do is get used buckets from the bakery department of the local supermarket. I also use Home Depot buckets. The reason that I feel safe with the Home Depot buckets is that I am using Mylar bags inside the buckets. The Mylar bag will give me the barrier between the food and the bucket as well as being an oxygen barrier.

As with everything else, do your own research and “let the buyer beware”.

IMF Moves to Replace the Dollar as the World’s Reserve Currency

Our “leaders” in the US have been able to keep their Dollar Ponzi Scheme going so long because the dollar has been the world’s reserve currency. This privilege has been abused to the point that the global economy is in the midst of a crash. Hyperinflation is becoming our biggest export. Once this reserve status “credit card” is revoked, the shopping spree that we have been on as a nation will come to a screeching halt. U.S. dollar-dominated currency system a “product of the past”

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703551604576085803801776090.html?mod=WSJ_hp_LEADNewsCollection

Chinese President Hu Jintao is calling the U.S. dollar a thing of the past. If it were anyone else saying this it would still be bad, but this is coming from the one who has given us our national “credit card”. Just a few weeks ago China and Russia indicated their lack of confidence in the dollar by agreeing to do all future trading in their own currencies. The dollar bubble is about to burst. If China wasn’t holding so many of our worthless dollars they would have completely dumped them by now. Sooner or later, they will decide that they are going to cut their losses and do just that. When this happens, WATCH OUT!

The prudent thing to do is to cash in those 401ks, reduce your savings accounts to bare minimum and buy commodities. Gold, Silver and Food for storage are your best bets to survive the coming collapse.

Silver Prices in for a Wild Ride – Buckle Up

There is talk of some hedge funds gearing up to attack the Silver Shorts for March Delivery… So what that means is that we could look at even more price volatility than is a normal part of any bull run. (Bull markets are characterized by sharp drops punctuating the steady increases.  Some call these “bear traps” because the sudden price drops scare the people who are more bearish on the prices and they get trapped by selling, only to miss the next leg up.)

Look for a big move up in silver, with some more big swings as we approach March, the month that those holding futures contracts have to either take delivery or renew for another 90 days.  Since banksters like JP Morgan are so overexposed with their short positions, if several hedgefunds go long on silver and decide to take delivery of their metals in March, JP Morgan will be looking at huge losses and, as they scramble to purchase actual, physical silver to pay off their contracts, the prices will jump drastically due to supply shortages.

If this talk of an attack on the silver shorts is just talk, then we will “only” be looking at a continued increase in prices, which we predict will be at least $50 / ounce by year’s end.

Look for 2011 to be the year when “hyperinflation” becomes a household word.
